dxFeed announces that effective July 13, 2026, data from Morningstar will be updated due to changes in their internal asset classification. Although the API remains unchanged, we recommend reviewing your processes that rely on this data to ensure they remain unaffected.

Why is Morningstar making this update?

The updated classification is designed to better align with today’s economic realities and empower investors with tools to navigate emerging industries using sharpened industry definitions, incorporating new market developments, and ensuring the classification system remains aligned with the changing business landscape. It introduces new classifications for key industries such as Diversified Chemicals, Industrial Gases, Crypto Mining and Alternative Energy Equipment.

What are the specific changes?

Scope: The classification will now include private companies, not only public companies.

Classification Structure:

  • The new structure continues to feature 3 Super Sectors and 11 Sectors. There will be 60 Industry Groups and 156 Industries, ensuring comprehensive coverage of both traditional and emerging industries.
  • New industry groups like Fintech, Diversified Utilities, and others are now appropriately classified to reflect their growing significance.

Field values: updates include new additions, discontinuations, name changes, industry and sector movements, and definition updates. The details of the new version are available in this file.

The structure of the API (the fields) remains unchanged; only field values change. Fields affected: srcEconomySphereCode, srcIndustryCode, srcIndustryGroupCode, and srcSectorCode in the Asset Classification and Historical Asset Classification controllers.

What actions do clients need to take?

The updates will automatically apply to our Asset Classification and Historical Asset Classification controllers. We recommend reviewing your processes that rely on this data to ensure they remain unaffected.
